ISO-9000 is a series of international standards for quality management systems.The series establishes the organizational structure and processes for ensuring that production of products and services meets a consistent and agreed upon level of quality for a company’s customers. The ISO-9000 series of standards is unique in that it applies to all organizations and industries encompassing manufacturing and service sectors and is used worldwide.

From the inception of UOE, the quality management system and employee participation in it has played a key role in our success. At UNIROYAL Optoelectronics, we’ve adopted an integrated on-line electronic database system with which to initiate and develop our quality management program.

UOE has implemented a paper-free, Windows-based, electronic Quality Management System that incorporates all aspects of quality management and administrative activities. This foundation includes: Project Task Management; Document and Configuration Control; Audits and Corrective Action; Internal Assessment; Supplier Assessment; Team Databases, Quality Awareness; Parts Catalog; Nonconforming Material and Waivers; Inspection and Test; Vendor Management; Customer Management; Contract Review; Calibration; Engineering Change Order; Design Process and Change Management; Employee Training; Assessment Systems; Gage R&R; Escalation and General (Relational) Archive Database component features.

This quality management foundation is based upon achievement of ISO-9001: 2000, and QS-9000 and is used by the company to foster product consistency and as a baseline for benchmarking performance. Desktop status of all elements is available throughout the factory. The Calibration System provides real-time reporting and analysis. Actions such as CARs, NCMRs, Waivers and ECRs are easily monitored. APQP/Dynamic Quality Plan, Production Part Approval (PPAP), QS Process Planning and other QS-9000 elements are also available within this system. Weekly Quality Training is conducted involving all employees. Lead Auditors are trained per ISO-9001: 2000 Standards and conduct weekly audits with the Quality Manager.

UOE recognizes that these systems are not just good for customers. They are good for business. With this in mind, the company began final certification and will complete ISO-9001: 2000 Registration in March 2001.
