UNIROYAL Optoelectronics is committed
to protecting and improving the environment. The
UNIROYAL Optoelectronics' state-of-the-art manufacturing
facility was founded and designed for the safe,
efficient manufacture of low-power Light Emitting
Diodes (LEDs).
UNIROYAL
Optoelectronics' LEDs are “Green” Products: The
world continues to need more light. Now
solid-state LEDs are looked upon by technologists,
government officials and industry as the ultimate
source for low-power alternative lighting solutions
to incandescent and other forms of traditional
higher power lighting methods for: general, architectural,
vehicle, safety, traffic management, industrial
and other lighting applications.
A recent Government study* reveals: a) LEDs,
in monochrome applications, replace filtered incandescent
lamps with power savings typically in the range
of 50% to 90% depending on color and application
and b) with “White ” LED technology, LEDs are
expected to replace a minimum of 10% of the global
light flux generated from electrically operated
light sources by 2025. This translates to global
electricity savings in 2025 of $44B or to a reduction
in the installed generator capacity of 50GW (equal
to 37 nuclear generating plants).
UNIROYAL’s Manufacturing & Safety Practices Are
“Green ”: The chemicals used in compound semi-conductor
fabrication are hazardous. Bulk gasses, hazardous
gases, deionized water, chemicals and electric
power are used to manufacture each wafer and during
this process wastes are produced. At
UNIROYAL Optoelectronics, our Environmental, Health,
and Safety (EHS) Program is the essential element
to the company’s sustained success. We integrate
EHS into everything we do, not just for the short
term but for the long-term benefit of the company
and our community. UNIROYAL Optoelectronics’ EHS
Goals include:
- Maintain Operations To Not Adversely Affect
Our Community’s Air, Water, and Land
- Continuously Improve Our Company’s Environment
and Safety Programs
- Conserve All Natural Resources and Reduce
Waste Generation and Emissions
- Be Responsible for Compliance with All Local,
State and Federal Laws
Integrated factory safety and environmental systems
were an integral design feature in the building
and development of our foundry. Reactor safety,
process and system monitors, integrated throughout
the foundry, provide for a safe and environmentally
compatible system with effluent handling built
in for hazardous processes and procedures.
Many materials are cleaned and reused by these
systems, others, such as spent solvents, are collected
and sent to facilities that recycle them for resale
and reuse. Fuel air emissions are controlled by
the use of state of the art pollution abatement
equipment. Examples include air scrubbers which
“scrub” pollutants out of air exhaust, and wastewater
pretreatment systems which neutralize mineral
acids and remove wastes from the water, which
is then recycled. UNIROYAL Optoelectronics’ Program
is also active with our community and local governments
to find additional methods for the recycling and
use of the waste materials we generate and collect.
Within the UNIROYAL Optoelectronics manufacturing
operations and in our outside community, the company
seeks a healthful and safe workplace, free of
occupational hazards, injury and illness and one
that is in concert with our environment. We emphasize
individual responsibility by all employees. We
encourage employees to report safety and environmental
hazards and issues freely.
